La province du Nord-Kivu fait face à une grave pénurie de sages-femmes, une situation qui menace la santé des mères et des nouveau-nés. Le cri d’alerte a été lancé le 5 mai à Goma à l’occasion de la Journée internationale dédiée à la profession de sages-femmes.
Selon l’Ordre provincial des sages-femmes, le Nord-Kivu, dont la population est estimée entre 6,6 et 9 millions d’habitants, ne compte que 778 sages-femmes recensées. Parmi elles, 55 % sont au chômage et moins de 300 exercent actuellement dans des structures sanitaires.
L’édition 2026 de cette journée a été célébrée sous le thème : « Un million de sages-femmes de plus ». Le Fonds des Nations unies pour la population (UNFPA) souligne qu’il existe un déficit mondial d’environ 90 % de sages-femmes qualifiées, alors que seulement 10 % des besoins sont couverts.

« Au Nord-Kivu, nous ne sommes pas épargnés par ce défi. Les statistiques présentées montrent que seulement 778 sages-femmes ont été recensées dans la province », a déclaré Perle Birayi, secrétaire provinciale de l’Ordre des sages-femmes du Nord-Kivu.
Elle a insisté sur le fait que l’insuffisance du personnel qualifié prive une grande partie de la population de soins de qualité en santé sexuelle et reproductive.
Les professionnels de santé rappellent que les sages-femmes jouent un rôle essentiel dans les consultations prénatales, les accouchements, la planification familiale, la sensibilisation communautaire ainsi que dans d’autres services de santé reproductive, notamment les soins liés aux avortements sécurisés.
« Les sages-femmes sont également qualifiées pour assurer les soins complets liés aux avortements sécurisés. Lorsqu’elles sont insuffisantes, la population se tourne vers des praticiens non qualifiés, ce qui peut entraîner de graves conséquences, notamment des décès liés aux avortements non sécurisés », a expliqué Perle Birayi.
La province du Nord-Kivu compte 34 zones de santé, plus de 20 hôpitaux généraux de référence et plus de 100 centres hospitaliers répartis dans les territoires de Beni, Lubero, Masisi, Nyiragongo, Rutshuru et Walikale, selon les données de la division provinciale de la santé.
D’après les statistiques présentées lors d’une formation sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive organisée en avril 2026, entre trois et quatre femmes meurent chaque heure en RDC des suites de complications liées à la grossesse et à l’accouchement, soit plus de 72 décès par jour. Le taux de mortalité maternelle est estimé à 747 décès pour 100 000 naissances vivantes.
À l’occasion de leur journée internationale, les sages-femmes du Nord-Kivu ont appelé les autorités à améliorer leurs conditions de travail et à renforcer leur déploiement dans les structures sanitaires afin de garantir un meilleur accès aux soins pour les femmes et les nouveau-nés.
