La République démocratique du Congo (RDC) continue de faire face à l’une des crises alimentaires les plus graves au monde, ont alerté mercredi l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) et le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM), rapporte l’ONU info.
Selon la dernière analyse du Cadre intégré de classification de la sécurité alimentaire (IPC), plus de 26,5 millions de personnes, soit près d’un Congolais sur quatre, peinent aujourd’hui à satisfaire leurs besoins alimentaires de base.
Parmi elles, plus de 3,6 millions se trouvent dans une situation d’urgence alimentaire, confrontées à des pénuries critiques menaçant directement leur survie. Malgré une légère amélioration par rapport aux précédentes estimations, la crise reste plus grave qu’à la fin de l’année 2025, signe d’un enracinement durable de l’insécurité alimentaire dans le pays.
« Loin de s’atténuer, la crise s’est enracinée et complexifiée, piégeant des millions de ménages vulnérables dans un cycle de besoins persistants », a déclaré David Stevenson, Représentant du PAM dans le pays.
Des millions de déplacés
Les provinces du Nord-Kivu, du Sud-Kivu, de l’Ituri et du Tanganyika figurent parmi les plus touchées. Les violences persistantes y provoquent des déplacements massifs, détruisent les moyens de subsistance et perturbent les marchés ainsi que l’accès aux terres agricoles.
Au total, plus de 7,8 millions de personnes sont déplacées à l’intérieur du pays. Beaucoup ont perdu leurs maisons, leurs champs, leur bétail et leurs sources de revenus. À cette situation s’ajoutent la flambée des prix alimentaires, les ruptures des chaînes d’approvisionnement et des épidémies récurrentes, notamment de choléra, de rougeole et de Mpox.
La situation nutritionnelle suscite également une vive inquiétude. Entre janvier et juin 2026, environ 4,18 millions d’enfants de moins de cinq ans auront besoin d’un traitement contre la malnutrition aiguë. Parmi eux, plus de 1,3 million souffrent ou risquent de souffrir de malnutrition aiguë sévère, une condition potentiellement mortelle en quelques semaines sans prise en charge rapide.
Plus de 1,5 million de femmes enceintes ou allaitantes devraient également être touchées par la malnutrition aiguë, aggravant les risques sanitaires pour les mères et les enfants.
Une aide insuffisante
Face à l’ampleur des besoins, les agences onusiennes estiment que l’aide humanitaire reste largement insuffisante. Depuis janvier, le PAM a fourni une assistance alimentaire ou monétaire d’urgence à près de 1,3 million de personnes, une fraction seulement des populations en détresse dans l’est du pays.
La FAO réclame pour sa part 163 millions de dollars supplémentaires afin d’intensifier son soutien agricole d’urgence avant les prochaines saisons de semis.
« Chaque saison agricole manquée accroît la dépendance à l’égard de l’aide humanitaire », a déclaré Athman Mravili, Représentant par intérim de la FAO en RDC. « Lorsque les familles reçoivent des semences, des outils et un soutien aux moyens de subsistance fourni en temps opportun, elles peuvent produire de la nourriture en quelques semaines, préserver leur dignité et éviter de sombrer davantage dans la faim. Mais ce soutien doit arriver avant que la période des semis ne se referme ».
Les deux agences appellent à combiner aide humanitaire immédiate et investissements durables dans les systèmes alimentaires afin d’éviter une aggravation irréversible de la crise.
